DRAFT ARTICLE / AWAITING NURSERY REVIEW

Planning a native garden in Northland

Think in layers, leave room to grow, and work with the conditions you have.

There is no single Northland garden

A coastal site can face salt-laden wind, while a sheltered inland hollow may hold cold air. Start by observing your own site rather than assuming that a mild regional climate tells the whole story. Check drainage after heavy rain and look for exposed or shaded areas.

Plan for the garden in years to come

Begin with the space available for larger trees and shrubs, then consider the lower layers. Use mature dimensions to plan spacing and access. Repeating a suitable plant can create calm, but a variety of leaf shapes and growth habits can give the planting a more generous rhythm.

Work in manageable stages

Prepare a small area well and make a realistic plan for watering and weed control during establishment. Confirm which plants are suitable for the particular ground and which are actually available. This draft is intended as a planning prompt, not a planting prescription for every Northland site.

Draft advice for nursery review. Recommendations must be checked for the individual plants, site and conditions being discussed.
